well atom is the smallest unit of an element. but elements exist in molecular form, i.e, atoms combine to form a molecule. elements may be uni atomic, di, tri or poly atomic. for example chlorine exists as diatomic molecule. Cl2. but metals exist as uniatomic. like Mg or Fe etc.
