The tribes in India are spread over the length and breadth of the country. About 2/3 of the total tribal population of the country are found in the five states – Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The huge variation in the Indian tribes is very complex and intimate. It is impossible to classify the tribes into various groups based on the cultural characteristics.

Due to this, the zonal classifications are attempted entirely based on geographical distribution of Indian tribes.   The geographical distribution of India tribes is classified into 3 broad zones including southern zone, central zone and north-eastern and north zone.
