according to this doctrine, heirs adopted without the consent of the company, could inherit only the private property of the deceased ruler and not his territory which would come under the company's rule

Lord Dalhousie devised policy that came to be known as the doctrine of lapse .

The doctrine declared that if an Indian ruler died without a male heir , his kingdom would become part of company's territory .

Kingdoms were annexed simply by applying this doctrine .

Kingdoms like satara , sambalpur , udaipur , nagpur and jhansi annexed using this doctrine .
