The Estates General of 1789 was a general assembly representing the French estates of the realm: the clergy (First Estate), the nobility (Second Estate), and the commoners (Third Estate), the last of Estates General of Kingdom of France. Summoned by King Louis XVI, it was brought to an end when the Third Estate formed into a National Assembly, inviting the other two to join, against the wishes of the King. This signaled the outbreak of the French Revolution.

Meeting of Estate General - On 5 May 1789, Louis XVI called for meeting to propose new taxes. Representatives of all estate reached there , but the member of third estate had to stand at back , as they were not offered any seat. Peasants , artisians , and women were not allowed to enter to the the assembly.

Demand for one person one vote - Members of third estate demanded the power of each member to vote. When the king rejected the demand , members of third of third estate walked out of the assembly to protest.

Meeting of the newly formed National Assembly - Since the percentage of the third estate was more, they considered themselves as spokemen for the whole French Nation. They are assembled in an indoor tennis court of Versailles and declared themselves as the 'National Assembly'. They believe in the removing the feudal privileges of nobles and clergy.

Winter created worse situation - A severe winter had meant a bad harvest; the price of bread rose, often Bakers exploited the situation and hoarded supplies. After spending an hour in long queues at a bakery ,crowded crowded of Angry women stomed into the shop. At the same time king ordered troops to move into Paris. On 14th July, the agiated crowd stormed and destroyed the Bastille.

Revolt by peasants- The countryside rumours spread from village to village that their ripe crops would be destroyed by the hired bands of Lords of manors. preasants in several districts seized hoes and attack the residences of their manors. They looted hoarded grains and burn down documents containing record of the manorial dues.
