Events lead to Non-cooperation movement :-
- The introduction of the rowlatt act gave the govt. enormous power to repress political activities. it gave them the power to put political leaders under detention for 2 years without any trials.
- Gandhi Ji wanted a non-violent protest against it but the popular upsurge frightened the government. local leaders were locked up in amritsar and gandhiji was barred from entering delhi.
- There was firing on peaceful processions, resulting in attacks on police stations and railway stations . martial law was imposed and general dyer took command.
- Then there was the unfortunate jallianwala bagh massacre in amritsar. so the people took to the streets and the govt. responded with brutal repression.
