In October 1917, the socialists under Lenin staged an uprising because he sensed that the Provisional Government would impose dictatorship as their disagreement with the Bolsheviks increased. He united Bolshevik supporters from the army, factories and soviets together. Lenin along with Leon Trotskii decided to seize power but the date was kept under wraps. On 24th October, 1917, getting a hint of the impending revolution, Prime Minister Kerenskii left the capital and imposed a clamp down on Bolshevik establishments. Two pro-Bolshevik newspapers were taken over by the government, and troops were sent to guard the Winter Palace. But swift retaliation from the Bolsheviks by shelling the Winter Palace and other military stations placed them in control over the government offices and establishments. By the end of the day, the city had fallen into the hands of the Bolsheviks and the ministers had surrendered. This change of power was later given recognition by the All Russian Congress of Soviets in Petrograd and the revolution spread to other cities and went on till December for complete overthrow of the Provisional Government
