Low literacy in India in general and amongst women in particular is very acute in India.
Women have not been treated with respect and accorded equal rights ever in Indian society.
Many rural people question the logic of having educated women and would rather that women stay illiterate.
Schools in rural India are at considerable distances and in absence of strong local law and order, women find it unsafe to travel long distances for schooling.
Archaic and traditional practices like female infanticide and dowry and early marriage have also contributed to the problem because for families it is not economically advantageous to educate the girl child.

There are many factors which are responsible for low female literacy rate..
1.Female were not allowed to get education.
Somewhere still it is continue.
2.They were taken as liable to family.
3.They were considerd not important in society only meant as a servant.
