FIGURE OF SPEECH

An expressive, non-literal use of language is called FIGURE OF SPEECH. It includes :
- Hyperbole,
- Irony,
- Metaphor,
-Simile etc...

IRONY is the FIGURE OF SPEECH used in BEST SELLER by O.Henry.

IRONY : Is a situation in which something which was intended to have a particular result has the opposite or a very different result.

John.A.Pescud is a Hyperbole,i.e, what he says, he does the opposite. He express his uncharitable views on Best sellers. He said that writers of Best sellers are not consistent with thier characters and scenes. They are far removed from reality. he said that they are highly exaggerated and too romantic. He says that usually people marry the people in thier own status. But, he, a sales man, married a colonel's daughter. It's just the opposite of what he told. So, the figure of speech used in BEST SELLER is IRONY.

Hope it helps..!!
