a) Only one-third of the students in Vietnam would pass the school-leaving examinations because if all of them had passed they would have gotten access to French education, which the French did not want.

This would make them compete for jobs with French people.

b)The French began building canals and draining lands in the Mekong delta because Vietnam had fertile lands which were appropriate for plantation crops and rice.

So to increase the agricultural yield they started building canals and draining land in Mekong delta region.

c)To control the intensity of protests by students regarding another student's expulsion, government made the Saigon Native Girls School take back the students who were expelled.

d) Rats were most common in the modern, newly built areas of Hanoi because sewer system became an ideal place for them to breed and live.
