a) The term saturated solution is used in chemistry to define a solution in which no more solute can be dissolved in the solvent.
b) A chemical substance, also known as a pure substance, is a form of matter that consists of molecules of the same composition and structure. It cannot be separated into components by physical separation methods, i.e., without breaking chemical bonds.
c) A homogeneous non-crystalline substance consisting of large molecules or ultra microscopic particles of one substance dispersed through a second substance is called a colloid.
d)  A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture that contains solid particles sufficiently large for sedimentation . The particles may be visible to the naked eye, usually must be larger than 1 micrometer, and will eventually settle.

Question

Explain the following giving example.

  • saturated solution
  • pure substance
  • colloid
  • suspension

Answer

{ \underline{\sf{ \blue{Saturated \: solution : }}}}A solution in which no more solute can be dissolved at a given temperature is said to be saturated at that temperature.

For Example : 35.7g of Na Cl can be dissolved in 100 ml of water at 20°c.

{ \underline{\sf{ \blue{Pure \: substance : }}}}A Pure substance consisting of a single type of particles i.e,all constituent particles of the substance have the same chemical properties.

For Example : Water,sugar,salt, etc.

{ \underline{\sf{ \blue{Colloid : }}}}A colloid is a heterogenous mixture whose particles are not as small as solution but they are so small that cannot be seen by maked eye.when a beam of light is passed through a colloid then the path of the light becomes visible.

For Example : Milk,smoke, etc.

{ \underline{\sf{ \blue{Suspension : }}}}A suspension do not dissolve but remain suspended throughout the medium.

For Example : Paints,Muddy water, chalk water mixtures, etc.
