Explain the following:
i. The magnesium ion is smaller than magnesium atom.
ii. Al2O3 is amphoteric in nature.
iii. For beryllium the group number and period number is same.
iv. Metals acts as strong reducing agent.

Answer:

a. In Mg atom total no. of electron and proton is maximum in comparison to Mg+2 ion (mg ion donate its 2 electron ). in Mg ions no of electron less and protons are maximum so their attraction force is maximum , that's why their size is small.

b. Al2O3 when reacts with base it show acidic nature and when Al2O3 reacts with acid it show basic nature.

that's why Al2O3 is amphoteric in nature.
