1.Oxidation - the substance that gives away electrons is oxidised. When iron reacts with oxygen it forms a chemical called rust because it has been oxidised and the oxygen has been reduced.

3Cu + 8HNO3 -------> 3Cu + 2NO + 6No3 + 4H2O

(Reduction - is a chemical reaction that involves the gaining of electrons. It refers to the side that accepts electrons. When iron reacts with oxygen it forms a chemical called rust. The iron is oxidised and oxygen is reduced.)

2.Hydrogenation - to treat with hydrogen is a chemical reaction between molecular hydrogen and another compound or element, usually in the presence of a catalyst such as nickel, palladium or platinum. This process is commonly employed to reduce or saturate organic compounds.

C2h5 + H --------> C2H6

3.Substitution - is a chemical reaction during which one functional group in a chemical compound is replaced by another functional group. Substitution reaction are of prime importance in organic chemistry.

CH3Cl + OH ---------> CH3OH + Cl
