The ultimate source of this energy is the sun. Producers like green plants trap solar energy and convert it into the chemical energy of food. When a primary consumer eats the producer, a part of this energy is passed on to it.The primary consumer is then eaten by a secondary consumer. And the secondary consumer may be eaten by a tertiary consumer, and so on. In this way energy gets transferred from one consumer to the next higher level of consumer. A series of organisms through which food energy flows in an ecosystem is called a food chain. It may also be defined as follows.

Food chain :
- It is the flow of energy from one organism to the next and so on.
- It usually starts with producer and ends with a carnivore.
- In a food chain, an organism gets food from one group of animal.
- Let's taken example : Grass➜Insects➜Frogs➜Snakes.
- Here, grass is producer, insects are primary consumer, frog is secondary consumer and the snake is tertiary consumer.
- When a group of several food chains interconnect, it forms food web.
- In a food web, an organism gets food from more than one group of organisms.
- Sun is the only source of energy for the flow of energy for maintaining the ecosystem on the earth.
- The flow of energy takes place through different trophic levels.
