A chemical bond is a lasting attraction between atoms that enables the formation of chemical compounds. The bond may result from the electrostatic force of attraction between atoms with opposite charges, or through the sharing of electrons as in the covalent bonds

Explanation:

A chemical bond is defined as a bond formed due to either sharing or transfer of electrons from one atom to another.

  • During sharing of electrons, two atoms who need to attain stability but do not have extra electrons to donate will tend to share their valence electrons so that both of them become stabilized in nature.

For example, in a CH_{4} molecule there will be sharing of electrons between carbon and hydrogen atoms.

These type of bonds are known as covalent bonds. Generally, non-metals form a chemical bond by sharing of electrons with each other.

  • On the other hand, in transfer of electrons an atom in order to attain stability will lose electrons and the other atom will gain that electron in order to attain stability.

These type of bonds are known as ionic bonds. Generally, metals and non-metals combine with each other through transfer of electrons.
