sodium ion is a metallic ion in group 1 so as a metal it donates electrons to attain stability and chloride ion is non metallic ion which accepts electron to obtain stability so sodium and chloride ion form an electrovant bond. The positive charge in sodium is because of donating an electron so the positive charge is in excess and chloride ion excepts one electrons with deficiency of one positive ion
