Mirages happen when the ground is very hot and the air is cool. The hot ground warms a layer of air just above the ground. When the light moves through the cold air and into the layer of hot air it is refracted (bent). A layer of very warm air near the ground refracts the light from the sky nearly into a U-shaped bend.

Hope this will help you!!!!

Answer:

: Mirage: Mirage is an optical illusion where it appears that water has collected on the road at the distant place but when we get there, we don’t find any water.

Reason: Variable refractive index of medium and Total Internal Reflection (TIR)

Explanation:

i) Density of air increases with height.

ii) Refractive index of air increases with density and also with height.

iii) When the light form a tall object like Sky passes through a medium it suffers refraction and takes a curved path because of total internal reflection.

iv) The refracted light form the sky appears as if the ray is reflected from the ground for observer.

v) Hence, Observer feels the water being present on road which is virtual image of the sky.
