Mirage on desert is caused due to " Total internal reflection " of light from boundary of medium. on hot day in the desert the earth surface is hot hence hair closer to the Earth's surface is rarer than the air up . When the light moves through the cold air and into the layer of hot air it is refracted . Let us understand this with the example of a tree in the desert .

When a ray from the top of the tree to the earth , it is travelling from denser to the rarer medium , hence it may suffer Total Internal Refraction at any layer. Hence we can see the image of the tree without water being there.

• The critical angle of diamond is 24.4° . Being the tendency to become "trapped "inside of a diamond once it enters into the diamond. Most rays approach the diamond at angle of incidence greater than the critical angle \sf( \theta_c) This gives diamond a tendency to sparkle.

• Anirban in the water science due to total internal reflection at its outer surface. Here , light is propagated from the denser medium ( water ) to the rarer medium ( air ) and if \sf i > 49^{\circ}(\theta_c) , Total internal reflection will take place .( Refer to second attachment )
