Ozone is naturally produced in the stratosphere by a two- step reactive process. In the first step, solar ultraviolet radiation (sunlight) breaks apart an oxygen molecule to form two separate oxygen atoms.

\Large{\underline{\underline{\bf{Formation\: of \: ozone\: layer:-}}}}

Ozone is formed in the upperatmosphere (in stratosphere which is one of the layers of atmosphere) by the action ofultraviolet radiations from the sun. High energy ultraviolet radiations split oxygen molecules into free oxygen atoms (O).

{\rm{\boxed{\boxed{{O_2} ⟶(UV radiations) O+O (Oxygenatom)}}}}

These free oxygen atoms combine with oxygen molecules \rm{O_2} to form Ozone \rm{O_3} molecules.

{\rm{\boxed{\boxed{{O_3}(ozone)⟶ {O_2} +O}}}}

Causes of ozone layer depletion:-

It has now been found that the amount of ozone in the atmosphere is getting depleted. Due to this, ozone layer is getting thinner day by day.The depletion of ozone layer is due to the use of ozone depleting substances (ODS) like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) . These chemicals are used in refrigeration, fire extinguishers and aerosols. When released in the air, chlorofluorocarbons destroy the ozone layer gradually and make it thinner. This allows more ultraviolet radiations reaching the earth.
