soaps are sodium and potassium salts of long chain fatty acids,e.g. C17 H35COONa.(sodium stearate)
Explanation:
sodium have hydrocarbon part which is hydrophobic at attracts dirt, grease, oil etc. whereas-COONa part is hydrophilic which attracts Water hydrophobic part and traps the dirt and grease which is washed away by water attracted by hydrophillic part in this process the scum is formed when it is treated with hard water.
