Functions of the human eye: The human eye is our body's camera. It helps in vision, as well as provides us with a sense of depth perception, and contributes to our balance. The main functions of the human eye are as follows:
- Light detection: Light reflects off of everything. Only a small portion of this light, known as the visible spectrum, is visible to the human eye
- Night vision: Rods are specialized cells in the human eye that allow for night vision. Rods outnumber cones 20 to 1 in the human eye, making daylight cells. The rods are intended to help focus attention on objects that emit less light
- Focus: Like a camera, the eye has a lens. This lens permits light to be focused on the retina, which is a light receptor
- Depth perception: Two eyes are situated in the front of the human body. This near location of the eyes permits stereo vision, which allows people to perceive the same object from a slightly different perspective. With two eyes, the body can tell not only the size of an object but also where it is in relation to other objects
- Balance: The eye is a tiny part of the vestibular system, which is the body's balance system. The visual system is in charge of informing the brain about the position of the body in reference to the horizon.
The different parts of the eyes are the cornea, iris, pupil, aqueous humor, lens, vitreous humor, retina, and optic nerve.
