• Polio is a virus-borne illness with a high risk of infection. It infiltrates the neurological system and can render a person completely paralysed in just a few hours. The virus is passed from person to person mostly by the faecal-oral route or, less commonly, through a shared vehicle (such as contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the gut. Fever, lethargy, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, and limb discomfort are the first signs of the illness. In one out of every 200 infections, paralysis is permanent (usually in the legs).
