it is the process of breaking down of carbohydrates (glucose ) into pyruvate molecules . pyruvate is 3 carbon molecule. It takes places in presence of oxygen, in absence of oxygen nd in lack of oxygen.
in mitochondria glucose is broken down in presence of oxygen in muscle cells in tales place in lack of oxygen nd in yeast it take place in absence of oxygen nd this process is known as fermentation. ..it's end products are ethyl alcohol, lactic acid nd energy.

glycolysis is the first stage of respiration.
it takes place in the cytoplasm. this breakdown glycolysis that is 6 carbon compound to pyruvic acid that is three carbon compound during glycolysis two molecules of ATP are used and 4 molecules of ATP and two molecules of the pyruvic acid or pyruvate are formed . It depend on the presence or absence of the oxygen
