The nineteenth century marked various independence movements against countries like France and Spain that possessed colonial powers. This marked the emergence of new states and paved way for nationalism resulting in the bringing to an end of various empires. This continued into the 20th century with more and more groups demanding their right for their political destiny. Moreover, the end of World War I triggered the upsurge of new nation states with the decline of world famous empires like the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires. Additional states came up a result of anti-colonial movements following World War II. Between 1944-84, there were about a total of 90 nation states. The Soviet Union collapse and formation of new republics raised this count to 190 across the world by the end of the millennium.
