i think that the gurukula was a type of residential schooling system in ancient India with shishya (students) living near or with the guru, in the same house. ... However, some scholars suggest that the activities are not mundane and very essential part of the education to inculcate self-discipline among students nd they give the knowledge with discipline...

In this Gurukul system one (students) had to stay away from home to gain education from a saint who used to be masters of their own feilds. There the students had to work for the school. And it wasn't a formal schooling system, by that what I mean is there weren't used to be big 3 or 4 or even more storey buildings, there used to be hute huts type structures called ashrams, and the students ised to study in open, under open sky.
