Almost 60% of the diseases in the villages of Karnataka are waterborne. Also, there is a deficit of water supply in many rural areas. So, The Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) in Karnataka finalised a scheme in order to supply purified drinking water to all the villages. Almost 1000 water purification plants were set up in order to provide purified drinking water to the rural areas. Each plant will be able to provide safe and potable water to almost 5000 to 10000 people depending on the usage.
The water from the purified units was supposed to be clean and safe for consumption so that the people will not have to suffer from waterborne diseases to a huge extent.
Also, the state health commissioner decided to implement the set up of these reverse osmosis water purification units in hospitals also so that the patients and their attendants will receive purified and clean potable water.
