A survey shows that of all the diseases that occur in the villages of Karnataka, almost 60% of them are waterborne. There is also a visible deficit of supply of potable water in most of the rural areas.

Therefore, the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) in Karnataka came up with a scheme for supplying potable and purified drinking water to all the rural areas.

Approximately 1000 water purification plants have been set up by the Karnataka government so that purified drinking water can be provided to the rural areas.

Each plant provides safe, purified, and potable water for approx. 5000 to 10000 people based on their usage. The purified water from these units was clean, safe for consumption, and hygienic so that the health will not be adversely affected and the people will not suffer to a huge extent from any kind of waterborne diseases.

The State's Health Commissioner had also decided to implement the Reverse Osmosis (RO) set up for the water purification units in many hospitals so that the patients, their attendants and the other people will be able to receive clean, purified and potable drinking water.
