  • The Gonds are the largest tribes in India.

  • They are spread over the states of the Madhya Pradesh Eastern Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, northern Andhra Pradesh and western Orissa.
  • The Gond tribes were further divided into many clans. The akbarnuma mentioned the Gond Kingdom of Garhakatanga.
  • This was further divided into units of 84 villages called chaurasi, which was again divided into barkats which were made up to 12 village each.
  • The Gonds belong to a category of very large tribe which include Santhals and Bhils. The Gond lived in large forested areas called Gondwana.
  • The Gonds were traditionally agriculturist.
  • Some Gonds practiced shifting cultivation while others raised cereals of herd cattle.
