Explain the hybridisation of CO3 2 - ??????

As from the structure of ion it is clear that the octet of all the elements are complete.

Now as you want to know hybridization of carbon atom take carbon as central atom, now we can see that carbon is bonded with two oxygen by only a single bond and one oxygen atom by a double bond to calculate hybridisation we only take no of single bonds formed by carbon and no. of lone electron pairs on carbon so from here:

No. of single bonds between carbon and other atoms:3

No. of lone pairs on carbon atom:0

and now add above two observations you will get 3

start counting from orbitals and count only 3 orbitals you will get hybridisation it is sp2 that is you have taken one s and two p orbitals.

We will use Lewis structure of CO3 square - 


Number of sigma bonds between C and O = 3, number of pi bonds formed between C and O = 1 


Number of lone pairs on C=0 


So, hybridization of carbon in CO3 2square - is sp square.
