The final blow to their religious sentiments came when the British introduced the New England Rifle whose cartridges where graced by cow fat and pig lard. The bullets head thick paper covering which had to be beaten of before loading. Believing that the fat of cow or pig might have been used to grease place both Hindu and Muslim refused to use them as this would offend their religious tradition.
On 29th March, 1857, Mangal Pandey, a sepoys at barrackpore refused to use the cartridge and attacked his senior officers. He was hanged to death.
On 9th May, 1857, 85 soldiers refused to use the new rifles and were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
Other sepoys rose in revolt, burnt the barracks and killed many British officials. This is how the great Revolt started on 10th may 1857 at Meerut. The sepoys stormed the jail and freed their Comrades short their European officers said their Bungalows on fire and cut the telegraph line to Delhi.
