The british introduced many laws, most of which took power away from the forest people to use the forest resources. Dietrich Brandis, a german expert, was appointed the first Inspector General of Forests in India. The laws he introduced caused great loses for the forest people.
1) Introduced the Forest Act of 1878 which classified the forest into Reserved, Protected and Village forests.
2) Reserved forest were off limits to the villagers and had the best resouces. The british had full control over it.
3) Protected forest and Village forest were allowed for villagers, though the villagers had to pay the government officials in the form of free labour or money, to collect and use the resouces of the area.
4) Villagers were thrown out of their villagers forcefully by governmant officials and were denied right to forest products.
5) At the same time, the brish hunted down wild animals. They considered them as savages and dangerous.
6) shifting cultivation was also banned.
