Answer:
Osmosis is the phenomenon of the movement of water or solvent molecule from higher concentration to the lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane. It occurs until the equilibrium is attained in the solution.
The biological significance of osmosis is that allow the movement and distribution of nutrients in the body and excretion of metabolic waste products out of the body. Cell contain semipermeable membrane and due to osmosis the liquid solvent pass through these cell membrane.
In plants due to osmosis a large quantity of water is absorbed from the soil by the roots. It also help in cell to cell movement of water.
Osmosis in plant help to maintain the turgidity of the cell and help to maintain the shape of cell. The turgidity of the guard cell regulate the opening and closing of stomata which help in transpiration.
