Explain the importance of pH in the digestion of food?

pH plays an important role in digestion of food.

In stomach for activation of protein digesting enzyme called pepsin, low pH is required i.e a slight acidic medium.

In small intestine alkaline medium is required for pancreatic enzymes to act which is facilitated by bile juice from the liver.
