Answer:

Since Romeo is madly in love with Rosaline about 15 seconds before he meets Juliet, we are given very good reason to doubt his passion and intensity. We also know that Romeo loves playing the game of love and following all the clichés of courtly love and how a young man who is madly in love is supposed to behave (staying in a dark room during the day, wandering in the woods crying at night). Shakespeare also gives us good reason to suspect that for much of the play Romeo’s love is mostly lust. Juliet, on the other hand, is frankly and passionately in love, even though she is otherwise wise and knows how the game of love is supposed to be played. She is even wise enough to doubt the depth and sincerity of Romeo’s love, until he actually proposes marriage in the balcony scene.
