Theca cells are stimulated by LH to synthesize androgens, which diffuse into the granulosa cells as estrogen precursors. Next, the follicle develops a fluid-filled cavity surrounding the oocyte known as an antrum. At this stage, the follicle is referred to as an antral, or Graafian follicle.
