According to the principle of flotation, an object will float on a liquid if its weight is equal or less than the weight of the liquid displaced by it.

For flotation,

Weight of the object = Weight of the liquid displaced

A floating object may be partially or fully submerged in a liquid. The liquid is displaced by the portion of the object that is submerged in it. 

We can tell whether an object will float or sink in a liquid by comparing its density (or average density) to that of the liquid.

An object will float on a liquid if its average density is less than that of the liquid.

An object will float on a liquid if its density is equal to that of the liquid, but no part of it will remain above the surface of the liquid.

An object will sink in a liquid if its density is more than that of the
