On the basis of period of composition, the whole Vedic literature is divided into two broad categories. They are: a) Early Vedic literature (Stuti) consisting four Vedas, Brahmanas, Aranyakas and Upanishads. b) Later Vedic literature (Smriti) consisting Sutras, Vedangas, Upavedas, Puranas, Epics, Dharam Shastras etc.
