The main features of town planning of Indus civilisation are the drainage system, the grid pattern, lower and upper town, the great bath, and the residential buildings.

One of the most striking characteristics of Indus Valley culture is its town planning. Harappan society was known for its mastery of urban planning.

Drainage system:

  • Large sewers were dug on both sides of the roads, with burnt bricks used to construct them. The drains were not visible since they were covered. These drains ran through the town and out to the outskirts, where they met up with a large well.
  • Each house's little drains were connected to a large drain that ran across the front of the house. As a result, each house's wastewater and refuges were eventually emptied to a large well outside of town. The technology-assisted in the prevention of bad odors and contamination

Grid pattern:

  • Harappa and Mohen-Jo Dero's streets were set out in a grid form and aligned east to west.  Each crossing was vertical, with a light-post at the intersection. Houses were constructed on both sides of the highways.

Lower and Upper town :

  • A typical city would be divided into two sectors, each of which would be fortified in its own way.
  • The lower level was on level ground, while the upper level was on an artificially constructed mound (also termed an acropolis).
  • The acropolis housed the city's most important structures, including assembly halls, religious structures, granaries, and, in the case of Mohenjo-Daro, the big bath and the lower town housed the residents.

Residential buildings:

  • The residential structures were mostly made of brick and had an open terrace flanked by rooms. These structures were constructed of uniform baked and sun-dried bricks. There were even numerous levels and paved floors in some of the homes.

Harappan culture's town-planning was, in fact, very modern and dignified. Their strong civic life is reflected in their infrastructure.
