A cooling tower is a heat rejection device, which extracts waste heat to the atmosphere though the cooling of a water stream to a lower temperature. ... The generic term "cooling tower" is used to describe both direct (open circuit) and indirect (closed circuit) heat rejection equipment.

Cooling Towers remove the heat from the fluids which are used in the industries for any manufacturing process.

There are various type of cooling Towers which are present at the time like open loop Towers, closed loop Towers, counter flow towers, etc., but all these towers have the basic components used in their manufacturing :

1) Wet Decks : these consist of water nozzles which spray water which is being cool down.

2) Air inlets and Air outlets : these are for the air move in and out of the system.

3) Intake louvers : these are helpful in keeping the water inside the tower.

4) Cool water basin : this is the area in which the cool water is collected after treatment.

5) Fill space : a honeycomb like structure where the heat from the water is extracted.

6) Fans : along with providing faster cooling they help in keeping in check the growth of moulds and bacteria on the wet surface.

7) Mechanical instrumentation like shafts, gear boxes, etc., which help in maintaining the functioning of whole system.

8) Drift eliminators help in making the system more eco friendly as these captures the steam within them.

9) Shells are the containers in which water is collected before its recirculation in the system.
