The meaning of mate’s receipt :  

The receipt given by the captain or mate of the ship to the exporter after the goods are loaded on the ship is called mate's receipt.  

A mate's receipt will indicate any deficiency in the quantity of goods delivered or any defects in the packing or condition. If Packing of goods is good clean receipt is  issued. If the packaging of goods  is defective foul receipt is issued. The forwarding agent should try to get clean receipt.
