In the poem 'Personal Helicon for Michael Longley', poet Seamus Heaney explored the Irish underlay, a typical feature of the landscape in South Derry.

Heaney considers the wells of his childhood as sources of poetic inspiration or, his 'Personal Helicon'. The wells and pumps frightened the poet when he was a kid, just as much as he was attracted to the whole concept of a big hole being dug out within the earth. As a child, the poet likens the well to a dungeon with odorous smells and brimmng with darkness.

However, in the course of the poem, it is seen that the poet has grown out from his childish pursuit of going near wells. Yet, the poet remains indebted to the kind of influence the wells have had on his mind and writing.
