In the poem, it is really foggy that day and hardly anything is visible. The fog made tall men out of boys and Giants out of men. The fog blurred his vision. He lost sense of direction and space. He didn't know where to go. The boy couldn't breathe due to the fog. The street lamps were of no help either and looked like distant stars.
A man comes and offers his guidance to the boy. The man lead the boy home. The boy also realized that the man was blind as he rapped the stones with his stick.
The actual meaning of this poem is how faith and trust are blind. The boy trusted the man, who was actually blind. He couldn't see yet he helped the boy reach home.
