The mechanism of breathing is as follows :

  • Human breathing is of 2 main pattern-
  1. normal,quiet breathing called eupnea
  2. strenous breathing called hyperpnea.
  • In normal  breathing, the breathing movement is brought about by diaphragm and external intercoastal muscles.
  1. During inhalation ,diaphragm contracts and increase the volume of thoracic cavity.
  2. The exhalation in this pattern of breathing is passive process.
  3. There is no muscular contraction involved during exhalation.
  4. 500 ml of air is sucked into the alveoli through conducting portion during inhalation
  5. 500 ml of air rushes out of the alveoli through the conducting portion during exhalation.
  • Strenous breathing occurs during exercise .
  1. Both inhalation and exhalation are active transportation.
  2. 3 liter of air is inhaled during inhalation.
