Electron configuration of sodium is 2,8,1 and that of chlorine is 2,8,7. Sodium has to lose one electron to get an octet and chlorine has to gain one electron. The electron from sodium gets transferred to chlorine and a bond forms between them. Sodium chloride, which is a more stable compound is formed.
