Parturition refers to child birth. It is the expulsion of infant from woman's uterus.
The process occurs in 3 stages:
Dilation and shortening of cervix, Descent and birth of infant and expulsion of placenta.
The first stage begins when woman perceives uterine contractions. Full dilation is reached when cervix has widened enough to allow passage of baby's head.
The second stage is when pressure on cervix increases. The head of the baby passes through the pelvis and out through the vaginal opening. This is assisted by additional efforts of pushing. Complete expulsion of the baby signals the end of second stage.
The third stage is separation of placenta from wall of uterus.
