Maira Paibi Movement...

The women of Manipur have always been socioeconomically and politically active. They have been more economically and politically active than women living in other parts of the country. There have been many movements in the history of Manipur in which women have participated extensively. There were many movements in the Pre-independence period in the 17th century, etc., in which women faced considerable resistance.

When Manipur became a part of India after independence, rebel violence was encouraged and conflicts with armed security forces also continued to increase. In such a situation, the male class of Manipur got into many bad addictions and got into the habit of consuming drugs. As a result, incidents of domestic violence against women of Manipur started increasing. In the 1970s, women organized themselves under the Nisha bandh movement and resisted and struggled against many social problems. In 1980, when the Armed Forces Special Powers Act of 1958 came into force under which armed security forces were allowed to shoot any suspect, the women of Manipur organized themselves against this law and started the Maira Paibi movement. State level violence, against human rights abuses and undemocratic law was initiated. In this movement, women used to march at night on the streets of the city carrying a flashlight and while protesting as such a team would protest against the killing of innocent people by soldiers and paramilitary forces.

The members of the Maira Paibi are mostly married and above 45 years of age. Majority of them are into agricultural and weaving occupation which.generally accrue low income. Among them there is lack of formal education and lack of participation in party politics. In spite, these women are very active in the state as a pressure group. Even the government and Army's could not lipids and suppress them they started talking their steps like testing, demonstrating, etc.

Meira Paibi Movement

Explanation:

Meira Paibi literally means Women torch bearers. It is a women's social movement in the Indian state of Manipur. They are referred to as the "guardians of civil society." The movement dates back to 1977 in and began in the Kakching district of Manipur. The name is derived from the flaming torches which the women carry while marching through city streets, often at night. They do so both as a patrol, and in protest, seeking redress against human rights violations committed by paramilitary and armed forces units against the innocent.
