The following measures can be taken to check soil erosion and ensure soil conservation:

Contour ploughing : Ploughing along contours on a slope prevents soil being washed away by rains or by surface run off. Contours act like bunds. Terraces are leveled into step-like small fields with even slopes.

Strip Cropping - In this system, crops are grown in alternate strips of land in order to check the effect of the winds.

Construction of Dams - Rivers are known to cause soil erosion. Dams are built in the upper course of the rivers in order to control the erosion of soil.

Where's the use of irrigation and fertilisers and Terrace farming also can help.

Soil erosion can be checked in many many ways,

The following can also help:

  • Maintaining protective plant cover is one.Planting crops(grass or grains) in alternative strips can be adopted.

  • Using mulch or introducing crop rotation also reduces the duration of time the bare soil is exposed.
  • Netting is a temporary form of erosion control.
  • Maintaining plant cover reduces wind speed.
  • Growing crops in intervals across a field of cereals, and using trees and shrubs as shelter belts or wind breaks are also helpful.
  • Taking pits at points at borders of the plot also is useful.
  • Plant fencing is a conventional method .

  • The most accurate and scientific method of estimating soil erosion is to measure runoff and soil carried by runoff on the basis of watersheds. Runoff can be measured continuously by Automatic Water Stage Level Records while runoff samples should be taken periodically and to be analysed in laboratories for soil loss.

Hope that my efforts help you.
