This is a short story written by Doris Lessing . It is a story of a widow mother and his son . It focuses how a single parent grew his son . She is worried mother who is very possessive about her son yet very open minded and gives some freedom to her son . As the mother and son went for a vacation to a beach , widow mother gave permission to her son for exploring the beach in his own way, on being asked by her son . Jerry was a strong swimmer and so gets into a challenge and after averting many hurdles wins the challenge and was satisfied .
Had Jerry's mother not been open-minded and scared yet valued private space , Jerry would not have succeed in his challenge .
