A measuring instrument is a device used for measuring a physical quantity accurately and systematically. Its important in order to maintain data for future references. Measurement gives a standard and ready reference for day to day things and processes. From height, weight, temperature, length, mass and even time; we have measurements and they are vital for livelihood.The money or currency we use is also a type of measurement. Infact, normal life cannot be even imagined without measurements.
Many errors occur in measurement that can be classified into:
1. Gross errors 2. Random errors 3. Systematic errors
Gross errors are human errors.eg.mistake of recording the measured data inaccurately.
Random errors occur unknowingly in a random and sudden way
Systematic errors affects all the reading in a particular fashion by any instrument.
To avoid above errors and loss of data, we need accurate measurements.

In ancient times people use the foot, the footstep, the handspan or the arm to measure length. But these units of measurement were unreliable because they vary from person to person. Measurement is required for a variety of things in our daily life. If you want to get a dress stitched then you need to know the length of the cloth that would be required to make it. Similarly when you have fever you measure the temperature of your body by a thermometer. To make a cake the ingredients have to be used in the right proportion.All these measurements must be made accurately using the standard units. There was a need for units of measurement which could be uniformly used by everyone units are called standard units.
