The elections are considered essential in our times for any representative democracy because:
1)Help in analysing that people like their representative or not.
2)They ensure that the representatives rule as per the wishes of the people and make sure that those who the people don't like do not remain their representatives
3)They solve the problem of assessing people on the basis of education,knowledge or experience
4)People can choose who will make rules for them.
5)People can choose the party whose policies will guide the government and law making

The common people of India or any other democratic countries give there vote as their opinion to their favorite candidates and the candidate who wins the election is the most favorite candidate of that country. Every common people has their right to give vote to their favorite candidate. So, in democratic countries election is very important.
