After the revolt of 1857, British to establish their control and power in India formulated new policies The British Parliament passed a new Act by which the powers were transferred to the British Crown from East India Company The Act was passed in 1858 A member of British Cabinet was made to take control of all issues related to governance of India from thereon By this policy the Governor General of India was given the title as Viceroy The term Viceroy refers to the representative of British Crown According to this Act, territories of the rulers of India would never be annexed Kingdoms can be passed on to their heirs and also adopted sons In return, they have to accept British Queen as their supreme paramount This policy is known as paramountcy

⭕Under Lord Hastings (governor general from 1813 to 1823) a new policy "paramountacy" was initiated.
⭕According to this, company claimed that it's authority was Paramount or Supreme hence its power was greater than that of Indian states.
⭕In order to protect its interest, it was justified in an annexing or threatening to annex any Indian kingdom.
